Why Mindfulness Is a Key Part of PRT

When people hear the word mindfulness, they often think it means clearing the mind or sitting quietly in meditation. But in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), mindfulness has a very different purpose.

It's about learning to notice what's happening in your body without immediately reacting with fear.

When you've been living with chronic pain, it's completely understandable that every ache, twinge, or flare-up can feel alarming. Over time, the brain can become so focused on protecting you that it starts interpreting even safe sensations as a threat. This creates a cycle where fear increases the body's stress response, and that heightened state can make pain feel even more intense.

Mindfulness helps gently interrupt this cycle.

Instead of bracing against the pain or wondering, "What's wrong with me?" mindfulness invites you to simply observe the sensation with curiosity. You begin to notice what you're feeling without judging it or trying to make it disappear. This simple shift sends a powerful message to the brain - I'M SAFE.

As the brain receives that message again and again, it starts to realise that these sensations don't need a protective response. The nervous system begins to settle, fear starts to fade, and the brain can gradually reduce the pain signals it has been producing.

In PRT, this mindful approach is often practised through somatic tracking, where you gently explore the qualities of a sensation, perhaps noticing where it is, how it feels, or whether it changes while remaining calm and reminding yourself that your body is safe. Rather than fighting the pain, you're changing your relationship with it.

Mindfulness isn't about ignoring pain or pretending it's not real. It's about creating a new experience of pain—one that's grounded in safety instead of fear. And as your brain learns that these sensations are no longer a threat, it becomes possible to break the fear-pain cycle and support lasting recovery.

It's a gentle practice, but one with the power to create profound change.
